A logistics service provider in parcel delivery, active in the Netherlands, is in a phase of growth and professionalization. Within the IT organization, the Business Application Management (BAM) department plays a key role in this.

The team has its roots strongly in the operation: many employees have grown from the business into application management. The next step is to build structural and predictable management, alongside the existing focus on projects and releases. The collaboration between BAM and the business also needs to become stronger.

For this professionalization effort, the organization is looking for an experienced interim professional to strengthen the current management.

Purpose of the role.

  • Further organize and professionalize the application landscape within BAM.
  • Establish a mature form of application management: predictable, manageable, and cost-conscious.
  • Achieve visible progress on the most important improvement initiatives, with clear reporting to the executive board.

Key tasks and responsibilities.

  • Structuring the application landscape: map out which applications exist, what they do, and which processes and departments they support, and clearly assign roles and responsibilities regarding business ownership, tasks within BAM, access management, and vendor agreements.
  • Professionalizing application management: set up and improve management processes and change and release management, monitor stability and performance, manage the lifecycle of implementation, maintenance, and phase-out, and ensure that new functionality is only introduced once it is technically and organizationally manageable, the costs including management burden are clear, and security, compliance, and privacy are adequately safeguarded.
  • Leading and developing the team: provide operational and substantive leadership to the BAM team, coach team members toward a more mature IT and management perspective, and set clear expectations and priorities with a focus on ownership, quality, and progress.
  • Stakeholder and vendor management: make agreements with business stakeholders on roles, responsibilities, and priorities and develop a realistic roadmap, and professionally manage vendors on service levels, availability, incident and change management, costs, and progress.
  • Reporting and progress: report periodically and concretely to the executive board on the status of applications and management and the progress of improvement initiatives, so that it becomes visible that important issues are being addressed and the department is becoming more mature step by step.

What you bring.

  • Extensive experience as a team lead or manager of Application Management; a very senior application manager with solid, demonstrable leadership and change experience is also eligible, provided you can operate at executive board level and are clear with the team and stakeholders when something isn't working.
  • A strong IT background; you think and work from an IT and management perspective.
  • Experience professionalizing application management in organizations where growth and change require more structure and predictability, and where business and IT need to be brought closer together.
  • Experience with improvement initiatives under clear mandate and time pressure from executive board or holding company.

Competencies.

  • Results-oriented and structured: you maintain overview, set priorities, and translate ambitions into concrete steps with secured follow-up.
  • Clear and connecting communicator: coaching where possible, and clear about what does and doesn't work.
  • Risk and control mindset: attention to continuity, costs, and manageability across the entire lifecycle, with an eye for the balance between innovation and stable operations.
  • Security and compliance mindset: understanding of access management, data flows, and continuity, always asking: does it work, is it possible, is it allowed, and what does it structurally require in terms of management?

Conditions.

  • Hybrid working, not fully remote: especially during the startup phase, at least approximately two days per week on-site, in order to quickly establish your position with the team and stakeholders.
  • You will work alongside the permanent team manager; the role is complementary and aimed at strengthening the management.

Rate indication.

A rate of €100 to €120 per hour (freelance) is negotiable, depending on the match and track record in comparable professionalization assignments.
